Banana bread

July 11, 2009

Word problem:
It takes Dick and Jane 5 hours to make 108 banana bread muffins, if they each comsume one muffin every half hour while cooking, how many muffins will remain at the end of the 5 hours?

If you can’t figure it out, I guess you could just go ahead and count them.

Beach

July 4, 2009

It’s the fourth of July today and we decided to celebrate by going to the beach. I only had about an hour to work so instead of a sand castle, I was only able to build a kind of sand fort.

I had Jen destroy it before we left so no one else would have to look at it.

Broken glasses

June 19, 2009

I “fixed” a pair of glasses today by soldering them together. I used an inch long piece of bailing wire to strengthen the joint.

I know this would look and work a lot better if it were welded but I don’t know how to weld, I know how to solder. hopefully it lasts more than a few hours.

Cell phones

May 24, 2009

How many phones do you carry?
I carry three. excessive? maybe. necessary? absolutely.

The first is my Sony Ericsson w760, It gets used primarily for texting & personal calls. Of all the phones I’ve ever owned this one is my favorite. The second phone is a Blackberry 8700c, it’s owned by Honeywell and I carry it because they make me. The third phone is my Nokia 3360. It’s about ten years old and I carry it around because it has “Snake II” which is my favorite game of all time. I spend twice as much time on the Nokia then on the other two phones combined.

Car bearing

April 18, 2009

The front right axle bearing in my car has been getting louder and louder over the past few weeks so I figured I’d better replace it before my wheel falls off or something. I called Goodyear to see how much it would cost to have the whole thing done for me, they said it would be about $500. I figured I could beat that. I started by pulling off the wheel, then the caliper, then the rotor, I unbolted the steering knuckle and pressed the axle out of the knuckle. I don’t have the tools to press out a bearing so I took the steering knuckle to Goodyear and they did it for $50. Here it is just before I started to reassemble everything.

It took 6 hours to get everything apart and about an hour to get it back together. I’m sure the auto shop could have done it faster, but I did it cheaper.

Clicky TV

March 8, 2009

My cheap-o plasma TV started to make clicking sounds the other day. I took the back off the TV in hopes of finding the bad component.

I couldn’t pinpoint the bad component but I was able to determine which board it is on. I looked up the part number of the board and found that it is the power supply. The cheapest I could find a replacement for was $200 and I think it’s a little much for a TV that only cost $900.

OSI Model

February 15, 2009

have you ever needed to quickly remember all the layers of the OSI model? no? yea me neither. But yet I can, thanks to this easy to remember mnemonic device.

Mnemonic OSI Model
Adam Application
Please Presentation
Stop Session
Touching Transport
Nemo’s Network
Doggy Data Link
Poop Physical

I learned this in college and while I don’t know who Adam or Nemo (sp?) are, I can’t seem to forget it. This is how I imagine it came into existence.

No Trees

December 27, 2008

About a month ago I came home and found a notice on my apartment door. I looked down the hall and saw that everyone else had the same notice on their doors. Here is the relevant part.

What the hell? This really pissed me off. I pulled out my rental lease and gave it a quick read through and there was no mention of not allowing real Christmas trees. So what, they think they can just make up new rules on the fly? whats next? no pumpkins on Halloween? no hard boiled rabbits on Easter? What a bunch of crap. So I called my parents and asked them to find me a small Norway pine tree and bring it down on thanksgiving. here it is.

The funny thing is I wasn’t even planning on having a tree this year.

UPDATE: we ended up keeping the tree all the way into March when all the needles fell off.

Tire Blowout

November 12, 2008

I was driving home on the interstate tonight and my damn tire blew up. I almost veered into the side of a semi truck before getting to the the side of the road to put on the spare.

I didn’t think to take a picture while it was on the car but here it is laying on my patio
